LOUIS VUITTON'S NAKED AMBITION

artist vanessa beecroft sure knows what haute water feels like. (photo from fashionweekdaily.com)

the original work by artist anthon beeke. (photo from fashionweekdaily.com)

paris --well isn't this a role reversal. for once, louis vuitton is the one being accused of copying! dutch artist anthon beeke filed suit again the luxury giant for borrowing heavy from his "naked ladies alphabet" which debuted in 1970. his suit names the 2005 episode where louis vuitton and artist vanessa beecroft used naked wmen to spell out the name, "louis vuitton." an excerpt of the statement issued by l.v is online at fashionweekdaily.com reads as follows: ' "Louis Vuitton, whose policy is to promote talented artists, deeply regrets any damage that has been caused to Anthon Beeke," said a company-issued statement. "Louis Vuitton, whose current exhibition on Russian artists is very successful, will continue to support artists known and upcoming to contribute to the development of art and culture." Beecroft, who originally said the work was inspired from a vintage magazine, added on her Web site, "As an artist, it was never my intention to create confusion between Mr. Beeke's work and mine." Vuitton declined further comment. Details of any settlement were not disclosed. '

MAURICE BEJART PASSES, VERSACE FAMILY MOURNS

bejart and donatella versace in july. (photo from wwd.com)

lausanne, switzerland--acclaimed choreographer and confidant to gianni versace, maurice bejart, 80, passed away last week. it seems as though he died from complicatios from heart and kidney trouble, though this is unconfirmed. bejart just recently worked with donatella versace on a two-part ballet called "thank you, gianni, with love," which commemorated gianni versace's death. donatella said in a statement, "Thank you Maurice for all your brilliance, passion, and contribution to theatre, dance, and art, but moreover thank you for your true friendship," she said. "I treasure the act of solidarity Maurice showed by creating a ballet in honor of Milan's La Scala Tribute to my brother Gianni last July. A real perfectionist and very intense, combining avant-garde ideas that were truly exceptional. The experience was very emotional as Maurice was one of Gianni's closest friends and they worked together so often. Collaborating with Maurice on the commemorative ballet at La Scala was a truly inspirational moment for me, and I will remember it always." her brother santo versace, also said, "Losing Maurice is like losing part of the family, another brother. Now I hope that up there, they will go back to working together." a memorial service for him is scheduled to take place today.

MY NIECE NIA & HALLOWEEN FABNESS

'lil nia with another cutie, michael in the baby seater. good job to naeemah and sabrina for popping out such cute kids.

jersey city, nj--check out my little niece, nia brown. unfortunately, she i couldn't be there to celebrate her first halloween with her. it broke her heart because i'm her favorite auntie. right nia!? she was dressed as a bumble bee and her nephew, michael was dressed as....i can't call it. it's cute though.

FROM COATS TO CONDO'S: RIVER ISLAND BRANCHES OUT

a dress from river island. gives me shades of forever 21, but wearable. (photo from dailymail.co.uk)

a river island storefront. busy really isn't the word to describe the windows...(photo from touchwood-solihull.co.uk)

london--my u.s readers may not know river island, but it is a pretty good "high street" store in the united kingdom. think joyce leslie or forever 21 with marginally better clothing. after doing more making a killing in the crowded retail market, they are now branching into something totally different: real estate. according to media reports, the lewis trust, the company founded by bernard lewis which owns river island, is planning a $200+ million dollar luxury apartment complex in barbados. the property will have about 49 beach front apartments and is set to be completed by the year 2010. i sorta like this. i can now buy a bikini and a one-bedroom from the same place. one stop shopping on crack.....

POSH & THE CITY? MAYBE NOT

with a man that fine and rich, i'd forget the whole music and movie thing and opt for th barefoot and pregnant path....(photo from asocialstudies.wordpress.com)

new york -- so i don't know why this is surprising....like peanut butter and jelly, rice and beans, beyonce and lacefronts, it's almost natural that posh spice, an "international fashion icon," would make a cameo in the "sexy and the city" movie, right? that's what the producers thought too, to the point where they moved filming schedules around to suit her. unfortunately, the busy spicenista did not have the time (and doesn't need the money or the extra exposure). according to wgsn, she said, "i am in full-on spice girls rehearsal mode, unfortunately, i can't' do it right now."

A FOR EFFORT: GAP LAUNCHES NEW PRODUCT RED COLLECTION

this luxurious mulberry roxanne bag will be remade into jersey for th product red product launch. (photo from thebaglady.tv)

british stylist katie grand, helped make this latest bunch of products truly amazing (photo from portfolio.com)

europe--it looks like their efforts are actually helping. gap just reported increased profit for their third quarter, and chances are their latest venture will help the company finish the next quarter on a strong note. "super-stylist" katie grand has assembled fierce fashionista's like giles deacon, stephen jones and the dynamic duo behind proenza schouler to put a fresh spin on classic pieces. the limited collection will be sold at the beginning of next month with part of the proceeds going to fund AIDS and HIV initiatives in Africa. unfortunately for america, the pieces will only be available at flagship stores in london and paris.

ONES TO WATCH...6267

tomasso aquilano and roberto rimondi the geniuses behind the label 6267 (style.com)

this piece is from their current fall 2007 collection. i live for it. it's sexy and edgy yet still classic. (style.com)
this ensemble cuts a bold silhouette. i love the high waist of the pants especially combined with the bulky coat. chic.
me in a fall 2007 6267 blazer. it felt like butter and as much as i wanted to buy it. the price tag of $3000 just wasn't in my budget.

milan--nope. it's not the number you should play during the next state wide lotto. but it is definitely a number you should be aware of. that's because 6267 is the hautest label on the international fashion scene at the moment. designd by the italian duo of tomasso aquilano and roberto rimondi, 6267 is taking fashion editors by storm. what is there to love? lots and lots and lots. i hit the pavement in london this past weekend to chat with stockists (retailers) of the label and everyone said the same thing: cut, fabrics and construction. these are the qualities that set 6267 apart and have it selling out all over europe and in america. the buzz started two years ago when aquilano and rimondi won vogue italia's "whose on next?" competition. they beat out over 300 applicants for the top prize of being crowned italy's next "it" designer. since then, they've made good on the hype by consistently producing sexy, body-conscious pieces with a retro flair. after trying on their items and checking out their past collections, i'm definitely a fan. what do you think?

JUST HAD TO SHARE: T.B.R READER, KAREEM ANGLIN

loving every little bit of this...

new york--stylin' on these fools, he was. so much so that blaynista, kareem anglin, was approached at a recent party by a popular japanese magazine. and what were they loving about his look? the same things we are salivating over: that vintage gucci briefcase, killer coat, and beaming smile. check out the blow by blow and what happened and why from kareem: " So, Mr. and Mrs.Lee, a husband and wife fashion stylist team saw me at an event and said: You're style is different and we must shoot you. Being the ambassador I am for great style, I agreed on the spot. The photo will appear in LUSSW, which is a premiere life-style magazine in Japan!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!!

london--while you feast on turkey and stuffing and sweet potato pie and vodka (oh! is that just me?) i am here in london eating bread, salami and cheese with a chilled cup (yes, cup) of white wine. but i am still thankful. you know why? because you are reading this. i started the blay report two years ago with no idea how to finish it. blogging was like a new language to me, but you - my dear reader - helped me master it. whether you just started reading today or have been reading since last may: THANK YOU! i feel blessed that readers come here every day for their dose of fashion news. let's continue this relationship for many, many, many years to come. xo, zb

I WANT THAT JOB: CELEBRITY FASHION STYLIST

alexander transformed foxy into a sexy noir vixen!

victoria secret model, selita, one of alexander's clients. the fitted cap and pose add a touch of edge to her usually sultry look.

this photo appeared in vibe vixen. the entire spread was beautiful. wendy looked sexier and classier than i've seen in years.

celebrity fashion stylist alexander allen, giving good face and fabulous style.

new york--what do beyonce, laura linney, pink, aretha franklin, foxy brown, wendy williams and a host of other celebs have in common? fashion guru, alexander allen! the brooklyn born stylist got a head start in the fashion industry working at venerable companies like marie claire and dkny before branching off to start his own company, trans4mers, which as the name suggests revamps the style of hollywood celebs and local fashionista's. it was our privilege to chat with him recently about career, money and exactly why the blay report is the hautest blog in town.

So...age is allegedly taboo in the fashion industry. But would you mind sharing yours? 30!

Where were you born? New York.

What's your title? Celebrity Fashion Stylist.

That's a fab one. How many years have you been at it? Seven years! I got my start through internships and assisting.

What were some expected and unexpected challenges along the way? Some expected challenges consisted of establishing myself as a key fashion stylist after having being an assistant, securing clients and living life as a freelance artist, as opposed to with security, in which I was used to. Some unexpected challenges included dealing with client's entourages, labels, etc.. on how they should look when the client's didn't have an idea on how they should look themselves, some client's opting to go the safe fashion route, as opposed to taking fashion risks and lastly, lack of prompt payment or payment at all. Those are all challenges that I've since rectified.

Is there a personal/professional motto that you live by? "What goes around, comes around." Also, "Straight talk leads to straight understanding." Wendy Williams.

What's the most profound lesson you've learned since starting your career? The most profound lesson I learned is to not bite your tongue and speak up for yourself. Other people do it, why shouldn't you?

New York is a sea of stylists. How have you distinguished yourself from the pack? My passion and my talent has and will always distinguish myself and my services from the sea of "celebrity fashion stylist" in NY or anywhere else.

So who are some fabulous celebs you've worked with? I've worked with everyone from Beyonce, Destiny's Child, Shakira and Pink to actresses Laura Linney and Sanaa Lathan to comedian Sandra Bernhard.

What was the experience like? As with any profession, you have you're ups and downs. I love what I do, so I'm good.

Money is a sensitive topic, so you don't have to give us specifics. But can you give us a clue about how well paid - or underpaid - professionals are in your field? In my line of work, you can create and maintain a very lavish lifestyle. However, that shouldn't be your primary goal or you will not become a success, especially during this day and time.
Realistically, what does it take to start out and make it as a stylist? Passion, creativity, intelligence and knowing how to multi-task are just a few attributes one should possess to realistically, start out and make it as a stylist.

So what's next for you? ...the sky is the limit! Short term goal, the beginning of my round two in 07/08! Watch out!!!

And since this is a style blog, we have to ask: what's your look for this fall? My look for fall is the same for all seasons, personal style, individuality, creativeness, authentic swagger, in addition to, some limited edition pieces from some new, mainstream and/or high end designers.

Finally, because we love compliments here at the blayreport, please, please, PUHLEEEZZEEE tell us why you read and love it! I love the blayreport because simply put, I love Zandile Blay!

H&M's NEXT STYLE STAR: MARIMEKKO

h&m creative director, margareta van der bosch, collaborating with cavalli. (photo from javno.com)

a drawing of h&m's upcoming collection. (photo from wwd.com)

paris--after the frenzy incited by the cavalli launch, h&m has announced yet another collaboration that will drive fashionista's mad: a spring 2008 line with marimekko. in case you aren't familiar with the brand, marimekko is a legendary finnish textile firm which was beloved in the fifties and seventies for its bold and vibrant prints. h&m is designing a "special capsule collection" featuring tunics, shorts and dresses - all made with marimekko prints. no word on the price points, but it will debut in twenty-eight countries next april. in an interview with wwd, h&m's head designer, margareta van den bosch said, "our design team has long admired marimekko's vivid prints and colors. the (collection) will be joyfully fresh - like a vitamin injection.".....in other h&m news, over 1,000 workers from h&m stores in new york city have voted to join the retail, wholesale and department store union. i sure don't blame them. the clothes are fabulous - but no discount is dope enough to make me work there.

STELLA IN SINGAPORE: ARE THEY READY FOR THIS?

vintage fab: mccartney takes a bow at one of her earlier shows. is that naomi with her? this chic is always in the mix. (photo from www.notablebiographies.com)

singapore-- one of my favorite designers, stella mccartney, has hoped on the expansion boat with a brand new store in singapore. this stand-alone outpost will stock goodies like fragrance, accessories, mccartney's new organic cosmetics line and of course, the fabulous lust-worthy clothing she makes. this is just a pit stop though: tokyo, the middle east, and moscow are all next.

BREAKING NEWS: ANNE KLEIN COLLECTION DUMPED

designer isabel toledo with husband ruben. (photo from www.nymag.com)

alec walk modeling an autumn 2007 look at the anne klein collection runway show. (photo from www.newsday.com)

new york-- womens wear daily just broke the news that anne klein designer collection will no longer be available after it's next shipment. the label, which is designed by isabel toledo and was viewed as the luxury label at jones apparel group has only been in stores for two seasons. no details yet on why the collection has been shelved so hastily, but it's resort collection which is expected to debuts in stores next month will be it's last.

WELCOME MUJI! WHAT DID BLAYNISTA'S THINK?

the store's logo, which i like. (photo from www.bibabidi.com)

my favorite item from muji.(photo from www.vestaldesign.com)

new york--an overpriced ikea or a really refreshing retailer? what is your take on muji? the japanese lifestyle chain, muji, opened it's doors in soho last friday. i've come to know and love the store, which is popular in london where i am based. their design can be ingenious, their approach simple and their prices can be affordable. those blaynista's who have visited the store in new york and abroad - let us know your thoughts!

DLF MALL: MORE LUXURY FOR INDIA

new delhi will be the new home of luxe come next year. (photo from www.dlb.com)

new delhi--mark the date: march 1, 2008. that's when the first luxury mall opens it's doors to india. the mall called dlf emporio will be home to 130 high end brands including giorgio armani, dolce & gabanna, louis vuitton, Christian Dior.....i could really go on and on. kajal aijaz, head of dfl - a luxury mall business - says, "the mall would reflect retro indian opulence. from architecture and interior to ambience and tenancy mix. we have tried to retain the stamp of indian luxury." it seems they are also promoting indian couture. there are over thirty indian designers whose couture pieces will be retailed at the mall as well. i love how india is taking this luxury fashion thing and running marathons with it!

WE SHOULD HAVE SEEN THIS: HAYDEN FOR DOONEY & BURKE

hayden panettiere has $omething else to smile about. (pic from www.superheroprofiles.com)

los angeles - are you surprised? i'm (sort of) not. it's been announced that hayden panettiere will be the new face of dooney & burke. like other celebs before her - emma roberts was the latest - she has collaborated on the design of a special edition bag to be named after her. according to wgsn.com, it is a "large leather shoulder bag with puffy pleats and buckle closure." sounds just as bland as the celeb who inspired it. (was that catty blaynista's!?) panettiere follows in the footsteps of mischa barton, lindsay lohan and emma roberts, all of whom have been designers/spokesmodels for the brand.

NO ONE IS SHOCKED: H&M GAINS IN SALES

signs of success: hip candy blogger, and blayreport reader, chanel sent us this pic from cavalli's launch in chicago. (p.s chanel, loves ur blog!)
sweden--my favorite (as in sole store i can afford) retailer, h&m reported that revenue has increased by 15% overall, with "same-store sales" (i'm sorry, don't know what that means) increasing by 3%. i for one am not surprised. people (like me) shop at h&m like it's a prerequisite. and with cheap and chic designer pieces like roberto cavalli's collaboration being sold, the stampede is sure to continue.

COTY SHOULD START A MUSIC LABEL: MCGRAW LATEST ACT TO GET A DEAL

i'd buy anything this man is selling. and probably, so will millions of other people. (photo from wwd.com)

new york--no, really: every music star has a fragrance and they all start theirs with coty. shania twain, celine dion, gwen stefani, jennifer lopez and now tim mcgraw are all bit-time artists who have scored a fragrance deal with coty, inc. mcgraw's deal was announced this week. there's no fragrance as of yet, but there are already big plans. his not-yet-titled fragrance will launch next summer and according to coty, inc, will be widely distributed.

THE RUNDOWN: TIA MOWERY

something about tia...(photo from theybf.com)

los angeles-- i have no words, except: she bores me - and so does this outfit. am i alone in this feeling?

I WANT THAT JOB: SNEAKER DESIGNER

the latest ad's for playphean sneakers & apparel. see more at their website: www.playyphean.com.

jersey city--james rembert gives the word "hustler" a very new and very positive meaning. since his early twenties he's been an entrepreneur, buying and selling homes all over new jersey and making a very tidy profit along the way. through it all, he's nursed a deep love for fashion, especially high-end, stylish streetwear. so it's no surprise that with realestate, and family conquered (he's a husband and daddy too) the 30 years-young jersey city native turned to fashion - full time. check out my exclusive interview with him where we talked about career, style and his new clothing/sneaker line: playphean.

so what's your official title? ceo/founder of play phean.

what did you do before deciding to start your own company? real estate. i have worked for myself for many years.

what motivated you to start a sneaker and apparel line? i was tired of seeing the same old thing! i'm not saying it wasn't hot. i just wanted a twist.

what was the inspiration for the name and logo? the name came after the sneaker was designed. we wanted to keep the line "playful," er goes..."play phean." the logo represents the many playful colors being spilled out onto a hot design.

did you have any experience in fashion design or retail before this? i was a model at one time, so i've always had an eye for fashion.

at the blayreport, we are mostly used to buying and not creating the fashionable pieces we love. can you give us a glimpse into what the process is like for launching your own line? Making yourself known building STRONG contacts. A lot of time is spent networking and finding people who can see your vision

what does a typical work day look like for you? Many days and night at the computer.

what has been the most frustrating part? the language barrier, especiall when it comes to having to explain what you want and how.

what has been the most rewarding? seeing the first product. do you have some words of wisdom for those budding designers/entrepreneurs currently reading the blay report? what ever you want to do, DON'T LET FINANCES STOP YOU!

finally - and most importantly - where can readers buy your sneakers? From our web site PlayyPhean.com They will be aviable December ’07 and retail for $190 USD. But in the mean time sign up to the mailing list.

by the way, we are total hams at the blay report. we love compliments so do you have any special ones you want to give us? this blog is great because it gives readers a chance to see what's new and hot - and what's not. it also gives the new designers a chance to be heard!

STORY TIME: ZANDILE'S LATEST BYLINES

check me out in the latest issue of marie claire. more details below...

london--blaynista's! i am just a writing machine aren't i? between this blog, school assignment, and multiple deadlines, i write more than i eat. (sound sad, but it maintines my waistline. just kidding!!!! sort of....) check out a few spots this month for my work - or work on me. let's start with today's huffington post, where you'll see my column on "how to win the vote: the h&m approach." also check out my work in the fall issue of jewel magazine with selita ebanks on the cover. i have three articles in there. finally, as i mention above, one of my favorite folks in the world, lambeth hochwald did a fabulous piece in marie claire magazine about health which features me and other wonderful friends.

CALVIN & CHANEL: ALL ABOUT OPENINGS

the latest chanel boutique promises to be edgier...(photo from www.dfsgalleria.com)

madrid & los angeles-- madrid is home to calvin klein collection's latest boutique. it is located in el corte ingles in the serrano district. fans will find a strong selection of ck's women apparel....in other store opening news, los angeles is home to chanel's latest boutique. the new store promises to be "hipper, younger, and less 'intimidating." according to wgsn.com, it will carry a strong accessories selection and will have over 4,000 square feet of space.

IN CASE YOU DID'T KNOW: BARE IT LIKE BECKHAM

very, very, nice. (photo from www.farm1.static.flickr.com)

los angeles-- the beckham's continue to show us ways you can make money by being hot. giorgio armani is the latest company to engage david beckham in a deal based on his looks (forget his skills on a football field.) according to several media outlets, beckham will earn over $41 million u.s.d to become the new face - or rather, body - of giorgio armani. he has already been photographed by mert alas and marcus piggot wearing emporio armani's new underwear line. the ads will debut on billboards and in magazines next year.

TELL 'EM WHY YOU'RE MAD: MARC JACOBS IN THE N.Y. TIMES

marc of a genius. the many looks - and weights - of mark jacobs over the years. (photo from the new york times.)

new york -- “Why are people so bitter and jealous and being so horrible to me?” this question and many other comments by designer marc jacobs, are part of a collection of rare jewels that make eric wilson's latest piece in the new york times dazzling. in it, wilson analyzes the mystery and mystique of jacobs. it covers everything from the annointing of marc as the "it" american designer to the latest media backlash after his last show. it's a fun read. check it out and come back to let us know your thoughts. find the article here.

THIS IS WHY HE'S HAUTE: JAY-Z & ICONIX BUY ARTFUL DODGER

examples of artful dodgers' artful pieces. i can't say i'm a fan of the brand. but i love the designer's hustle. (all pics from e-tailer, www.karmaloop.com.)

new york--ever heard of scion, llc? maybe not. but you know the owner. shawn "jay-z" carter, has partnered up with iconix brand to create scion, llc a holding company. their first purchase together is the underground clothing line, artful dodger. the brand was started - and run - by designer, scott langton. langton will still stay on as creative designer of the brand. oh, and the purchase price? 15 million u.s. dollars. cash!

THIS MAKES MORE SENSE: LILY ALLEN NOT FACE OF AGENT PROVOCATEUR

this is the new agent....(photo from teemix.aufemenin.com)

london--so, it turns out it was just a (very strange) rumor. agent provocateur has denied that lily allen is their new ad campaign star - and has confirmed that vahina giocante is their new face and body. she is to star in the third installment of the lingerie lines' ad campaign, titled "the adventures of miss ap." if you are from the states, like me, you have no idea who vahina giocante is. she is a famous actress from france who has starred in a variety of popular french films.

GUESS WHO THIS FROCKSTAR IS?

classic. on so many levels.

london -- blaynista's! we are all fashionista's right? so i'm guessing that one of you lovely readers can guess who this legendary designer is. in case you can't spot him, he is the one in shades, surrounded by paparazzi and kissing an equally famous celeb on the left. for extra brownie points, tell me who the female celeb he is kisssing is. hint: she is a hollywood actress who just recently starred in an ad campaign for louis vuitton. this picture is part of several being featured at the london college of fashion. it is part of an exhibit on catwalk photographer, chris moore. the reader who gets this right get's a shout out on the blayreport. (i know it's not a shopping spree. but humour me....)

franklin hugs me good bye at airport when i left for london.....
me & f. at goodbye brunch on the day i left.
zeba, my little sister, was my photog for the night.

miya, me and franklin.

franklin, me and nana.

brooklyn--i've been meaning to share these with you all for while, and am just getting around to it. these photos were taken backstage at the nana boateng show in brooklyn last month. my close friend, samiyyah williams and i, joined franklin and designer nana boateng backstage.
