ALEXANDER WANG TACKLES SPORT

The designer presents a sportswear-inspired Spring 2010 collection before a packed house with guests from Terry Richardson to Diane von Furstenberg and Anna Wintour to Rachel McAdams.

New York - In 2008 Alexander Wang was the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund winner, and this year his Spring 2010 collection continues to show he is deserving of that title. The designer called his recent collection as "very much about classic American sportswear," and he picked two great American sports to draw the most inspirations from: football and baseball. (Just in time for the football season too.) A neutral palette of grey, black, white and all shades of khaki, tan, and olive dominated his show with the pieces recalling football and baseball uniforms of yore. Think George Clooney and John Krasinski's 2008 football movie Leatherheads and Tom Hank and Madonna's 1992 baseball movie A League of Their Own for some imagery examples. So it comes to no surprise that his collection included shoulder pads, leather lace-up shorts, cropped sweatshirts, rugby-stripped sweaters, bra tops, stirrups, men's underwear and a varsity jacket with a letter "A" on it. The pieces were completed with shinguard socks, booties in brown and leopard as well as black cleats-inspired ones, and messy braids over one shoulder. Few models even carried baseball mittens down the runway, and dresses were included in the show with shoulder pads detailing, cut-outs and sheer fabric. The sport boxing also made an appearance as a model was outfitted in an all-black ensemble of bra top, high-waisted shorts and long black robe with the hood over her head. How very Rocky Balboa of her. Wang's Spring 2010 collection is probably the strongest and my favorite show I have seen so far this week, and it's going to be hard for another designer to take the numero uno spot from him, seeing how Wang's stylish, creative take on American sportswear spoke to the high school soccer girl I once was.

this show was a bit of a let down. I was expecting something more but I did see some really nice pieces. That tobacco colored leather jacket is to die for.

Do those blk booties remind you of a Givenchy bootie from a very recent season.

BTW, where was a blk model? How come he did use Rose from the Dominican republic? He used her for his Spring 09 book.

You know what, that's what I've been hearing about Wang's collection. While many loved it, there were also a lot who were underwhelmed by it.

I supposed the fact that I lean more towards menswear-inspired pieces for female clothing had me adoring his spring collection this season. There were just so many pieces that I would love to wear.
