What's new but is the Spring 2010 collection worth getting excited over?New York - It can't be all ready-to-wear collections at Fashion Week and Marchesa, known for its evening gowns, seems like the right fashion label to change it up a bit. Unfortunately it was anticlimactic. I looked really hard at Marchesa Spring 2010 collection to get more out of me than "eh" but I couldn't. (Seriously if I had to give this collection a one word summary "eh" would be the one.) This season designer Georgia Chapman's reference was Madame Butterfly, hence the mostly kimono-inspired gowns that featured origami shaped adornments. Chapman opted for black and ivory with few dresses in hues of pink, blue and violet interrupting the neutral color palette. Yet her collection still felt uninspiring. There was a lack of creativity and originality in her designs as several of the dresses reminded me of other designers' creations done seasons ago, such as Jean Paul Gaultier (see Camille Belle's dress at 2007 Met's Costume Insitute Gala) and Nicolas Ghesquiere for Balenciaga (see Nicole Kidman's 2006 Oscar dress). I'm not saying she's ripping off from them, but I couldn't help seeing other designers' pieces in her spring collection unless, of course, I could just be seeing things. Anyhow I'm sure these dresses will be worn on the red carpet since Marchesa is a favorite among Hollywood actresses like Diane Kruger, Kate Beckinsale, Rachel Weisz and Penélope Cruz. Chapman said she didn't know why they love Marchesa so much but I might have a clue: her husband Harvey Weinstein, a famous Hollywood film executive producer. Oh, I so went there!Kristina Bustos[Story/Images via Style]
